We all know the many benefits of regular exercise, and there is already extensive research completed on the effectiveness of treating depression with psilocybin. This is however the first large-scale randomized controlled trial, specifically testing this combination of regular exercise with psychedelics for major depressive disorder that I have encountered.
What the study found
The groundbreaking 2026 study suggests that combining regular exercise with psilocybin therapy could be more effective than psilocybin treatment alone for treating major depressive disorder.
Key findings:
Participants who combined aerobic exercise with a single high-dose psilocybin session saw a 45% reduction in depression symptoms
Those who received psilocybin alone saw a 28% reduction
Benefits were measured using the standard Hamilton Depression Rating Scale
Improvements in mood stability, quality of life, and daily functioning were greater in the combined group
Results held steady at a 3-month follow-up
Safety profile remained good with only mild side effects
Why this matters
This research supports the idea that physical activity may enhance the brain's neuroplasticity during psychedelic therapy, potentially creating stronger and longer-lasting therapeutic effects without additional safety concerns. This also indicates that the more active we are, the more capable we are of rewiring our neural pathways. And combining activity with psychedelics widens the door even further when it comes to changing habitual behavioural patterns that are not serving us anymore.
